Overhear Privacy Policy
Working draft. Consider a professional review before public launch. Items marked (planned) describe features that are not live during the current private beta.
Last updated: September 7, 2026 · Effective: September 7, 2026
1. Who we are
Overhear (“Overhear”, “we”, “us”) is a live audio-translation web application operated by Overhear. You can reach us about privacy at support@overhearapp.com.
Overhear is currently in private beta. Some features described here (accounts, paid plans, and per-user usage records) are being introduced and are noted as (planned).
2. The short version
Overhear listens to audio you choose to share, converts the speech to text, and translates it. We do not sell your data, we do not use your audio or transcripts to train AI models, and we do not store your audio recordings. Audio is processed as it streams and is not retained after your session. We rely on a small number of trusted service providers to run the product, listed in Section 8.
3. What the product does with audio
When you start a session, Overhear captures the audio source you pick (a browser tab, a media player, a file you open, or your microphone) and streams it to speech-recognition and translation services to produce live subtitles.
- Audio is transient. The captured audio is processed in real time to generate a transcript and translation. We do not save the audio recording. When your session ends, the audio stream is gone.
- Files you open are read in your browser to play and process locally; they are not uploaded to us as stored files during the current beta.
- Transcripts and translations (the text) may be held briefly in memory to provide context to the translation and to let you export the session while it is open. They are not retained on our servers after the session unless you are signed in and have chosen to save a session (planned).
- We do not use your audio, transcripts, or translations to train any AI model, ours or a provider’s. Our providers are engaged under terms that do not permit training on your content (see Section 8).
4. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Feedback and support: if you use the feedback form, we collect the name (optional), email address, category, and message you submit, so we can reply.
- Account information (planned): when accounts launch, we will collect your email address and authentication details to create and secure your account.
- Payment information (planned): if you buy a plan, payment is handled by our payment processor (Stripe). We do not see or store your full card number; we receive only limited details such as the card brand, last four digits, and billing status.
Information collected automatically
- Usage and diagnostics: basic technical data such as browser type, approximate region (from IP address), pages viewed, and error reports, used to keep the service working and secure. During beta this is minimal.
- Usage metering (planned): when paid plans launch, we record the amount of audio processed (for example, minutes or hours) associated with your account, to apply plan limits and bill overage. This is a count of usage, not the content of what you translated.
- Cookies: we use a small number of strictly necessary cookies, for example, to remember that you have entered the beta password, and, once accounts launch, to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect your audio recordings, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.
5. How we use information
We use the information above to: provide and operate the translation service; respond to your feedback and support requests; secure the service and prevent abuse (rate limiting, fraud prevention); apply plan limits and process payments (planned); understand aggregate usage so we can improve the product; and comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.
6. Legal bases (for users in the EEA/UK)
Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we process personal data on these bases: performance of a contract (to provide the service you request), legitimate interests (to secure and improve the product, respond to support), consent (where required, e.g. non-essential analytics), and legal obligation (e.g. tax records for payments).
7. How long we keep information
- Audio: not stored.
- Session transcripts: not retained on our servers after the session during beta; if you save a session once accounts launch (planned), it is kept until you delete it or close your account.
- Feedback messages: kept as long as needed to handle your request and for a reasonable period afterward for our records.
- Account and billing records (planned): kept for the life of your account and as required by law (e.g. tax rules) after closure.
8. Service providers (subprocessors)
We use these third parties to run Overhear. Each processes only what it needs, under contractual confidentiality and security terms, and none is permitted to use your content to train models:
- Deepgram: live speech-to-text (audio is streamed for transcription).
- Anthropic (Claude): translation and transcript repair (text segments are sent for translation).
- OpenAI: file-mode transcription baseline and, later, text-to-speech voice-over (planned).
- Vercel: application hosting and delivery.
- Resend: delivery of feedback-form emails to our support inbox.
- Supabase (planned): accounts, authentication, and database for usage records.
- Stripe (planned): payment processing for paid plans.
We will keep this list current as the product grows. Some providers may process data outside your country; where required, we put appropriate safeguards in place for such transfers.
9. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. To exercise any of these, contact support@overhearapp.com. You can also decline non-essential cookies where offered, and unsubscribe from any non-essential email we might send.
If you are in California, we do not sell or “share” (as defined by the CCPA/CPRA) your personal information, and we do not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
10. Security
We hold provider API keys only on our servers, never in your browser. Connections use HTTPS/WSS encryption. We apply rate limits and validate inputs to protect the service. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures appropriate to a product at this stage and will strengthen them as we move from beta to public launch.
11. Children
Overhear is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product changes. We will post the new version here with a revised “Last updated” date and, for material changes, give notice through the app or by email where appropriate.
